SEO, AEO, and GEO: what is the difference?

Search strategy

SEO, AEO, and GEO can sound like three different marketing worlds. At Carolina Idea, we use them to describe connected priorities within the same discovery journey. The useful question is not which acronym wins. It is what your customers need in order to find, understand, and choose your business.

SEO: make your business discoverable

Search engine optimization focuses on the foundations that help relevant pages participate in search. That includes accessible pages, purposeful content, sensible navigation, and clear information about the business. A service page should tell a visitor what you do, who it is for, and how to take the next step. Repeating a keyword is not a substitute for making that page useful.

AEO: make your expertise useful as an answer

Answer engine optimization is a working term for organizing information around the questions people ask. Think about the conversation you have with a new customer. What do they need explained? What affects the scope? What should they prepare? A clear answer near the beginning of a page can help a reader get oriented before exploring the detail.

GEO: prepare for AI-led discovery

Generative engine optimization focuses on the public information that may help AI experiences describe, compare, or reference a business. Useful work includes consistent business facts, original explanations, evidence for factual statements, and appropriate technical access. This does not create control over a platform’s responses. A brand mention or citation can vary from one experience to another.

The fundamentals still matter

Google’s guidance says that established SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are no additional requirements or special AI optimizations required for those features. In practice, that is a reason to strengthen your website and content, not abandon them for a new acronym.

Build a connected plan, not three disconnected checklists

Start with a review of the website and the questions customers bring to your business. Decide which pages need to be clearer, which facts need to be consistent, and what is preventing a visitor from contacting you. Then agree on the observations and business actions you will use to evaluate progress. A good strategy should make the work easier to understand, not harder.

The takeaway: SEO, AEO, and GEO overlap. Connect the work around your customers instead of treating each label as a completely separate product.
