Located in Iredell County, North Carolina is a town made up of around 36,500 people who occupy almost 21 square miles. This town is the largest in the county and is known as Mooresville. Thankfully, Mooresville’s history has been preserved since the beginning and this means that anything you want to know about the place, you can generally find. For a town with as long a history as Mooresville has, this is a relatively rare fact and is quite refreshing to see that so much information has been kept regardless of whether or not it is pleasant. For the most part, however, we will focus on the happy parts of the town’s history right now.
In the mid 1700’s, people began to trickle into the area that would eventually become Mooresville. This included some from Rowan County close by, while others came from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and other locations that have been lost to time. For the most part, those who were moving in were English, German, and also from the Scotland/Ireland region of the world. The families who gathered in the area, whose names we actually still know, developed a community referred to as Deep Well due to a natural well close by. As often happens when water is nearby, people settled and began to plant crops, in this case mostly cotton. Multiple plantations popped up throughout the area and helped to start the creation of what would come to be known as Mooresville.
Mooresville most likely got its name from John Franklin Moore, whose land was used partially for a railroad in 1856. He then built a depot for the tracks and encouraged others to settle closer to the spot. The created what was known as Moore’s Siding. During the Civil War, the tracks were taken away but soon replaced after the war was over and it helped the little town of Moore’s Siding to grow. By 1873, it was incorporated as Mooresville and development began through the help of both John Franklin Moore and his wife after his death in 1877.
Throughout the years, multiple plants were built which helped Mooresville develop into what we see today. Cotton and other textile mills began popping up in the 1900’s while the first water plant was actually built at the end of the 1800’s. In the same decade as the water plant, Mooresville also saw a library and phone company put in place. Since then, the development of this expanding town has not stopped and shows no signs of slowing down.
Although it began with one railway going through town, there are now seven highways that go directly through Mooresville. This provides incredible access to the whole area and all of the incredible things that this town has to offer. The historical influence that this town has had over the area and North Carolina as a whole is difficult to overstate. There are three full districts that have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as four other houses or plantations. Rarely does one town have so many eligible locations, but Mooresville is one of those lucky few.
Home to some of the best schools in the area, Mooresville is a great place to live and raise a family. There are multiple private and charter schools within the area as well as the local public schools which include a technology and art vocational school. There is also one of the best marching bands in the state in Mooresville, called Pride in Motion, that residents have every right to be proud of. There is also a local community college which students can attend without having to leave home if they have no wish or ability to do so.
One of the fun facts about Mooresville is the fact that they are one of the few towns left in the country that partake in a program of sorts that link different cities from around the world together. Sister Cities, as they are known, began after World War Two as a means to foster a more understanding and accepting world through showing that many places are not that different at the root of things. Many of these agreements help to encourage trade and tourism, as the sister cities (or twin towns as they are also known) often have similar interests. Hockenheim, Germany is the sister city for Mooresville and they are also well known for their racing ties.
