Site retargeting is one of those things that we experience each and every day, yet most people don’t know that it has a name. There is a joke going around Facebook right now that the ads are getting so personalized that you can simply think of something and see an advertisement for it. While site retargeting hasn’t become quite that evolved, it is meant to make your life easier when it comes to looking for something online.

Site retargeting is a cookie-based technology. While I like chocolate chip cookies as much as the next person, that’s unfortunately another article for a different blog. Cookies in technology refer to a piece of code that can be used to keep tabs on people who visit your website. Often, you can visit a site and see a small popup notice that says that the website uses cookies. Generally you can accept or deny the cookie by leaving or continuing through the page. Cookies don’t change the way your internet behaves, but it does allow for more personalized information and advertisements to reappear at a later date.

If you have ever visited a website that sells certain goods but did not make a purchase only to see that same site on an ad later, you have experienced site retargeting. It is called retargeting for logical reasons, as it not only targets people who have already expressed interest in the site, but will attempt to redirect you to the same site again even if you are on one that is unrelated. If you spend any time on social media, you have definitely seen the effects of site retargeting.

One thing that you need to remember, however, is that site retargeting does not ensure that people will come back to your website. It does not force browsers to purchase from your company, however it does allow your name to remain fresh in the minds and eyes, and possibly browser history, of those who have already expressed interest in you. This does help many business owners and most who use it report a higher level of return customers than if they had used other channels of digital advertising. If you are interested in using site retargeting, give us a call and see just how much of a difference it can make to you and your company.
